30 Days of Music: Day 10 – A Song That Makes Me Fall Asleep
At first, I thought today’s song was supposed to be so boring that it would put someone to sleep, but when I tried to think of one, I couldn’t. Music is not boring to me. If I don’t like a song, I get more irritated than sleepy.
Okay. There may be one genre of music that might induce a good nap. That would be classical music. As much as I like to think that I am a fairly cultured person, I do find most classical, romantic, baroque (read that as anything before the 19th century) music boring.
I did say most, so there are a few exceptions, but this is about songs, and I don’t know many songs from before the 19th century. Yankee Doodle is one I can think of at the moment, but that is a lively song and not good for sleeping. There are also some good hymns that were written back then (yes, even an atheist can like hymns). I do enjoy the occasional Gregorian chant, which under the right conditions could lull me to sleep even though I like it.
There is one classical song I know that is also a lullaby, music meant to put people to sleep. The problem is that this was originally just music until someone added words. So, does it count as a song? Anyway, I’m thinking of Brahms’ Lullaby. I think it’s the song most people think of when you are asked to put someone to sleep.
The real challenge is to find a recent song that is meant to put people to sleep. I know there are a few that I’ve heard, and when I hear them, I think about having a child and singing the song to them to help them sleep. Sigh! Someday perhaps.
One song that comes to mind is “Baby Mine”. I know the version that Bette Midler sang in the movie “Beaches“. The movie also contains a song that makes me laugh, but I have to save that for Day 25.
