30 Days of Music: Day 11 – A Song From My Favorite Band
For those of you who simply want to know the song for today, I won’t hold you in suspense. It is “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” by The Beatles.
Yes, I know it’s cliche, but The Beatles are arguably the most influential group of modern times. Everyone who has made it in music has claimed them as a influence, from Michael Jackson to Tsunku, the producer of Morning Musume.
Like one of the previous entries for this challenge, I had to make the distinction between a band and a singing group. Today’s song had to be from a group that played instruments when they performed. For example, I couldn’t have picked an ABBA song.
I also needed to go back in time, because I don’t really know the name of any present day bands. I confess that my knowledge of current music is lacking, and that is because I don’t listen to it. As I’ve mentioned before, I think most of today’s music is crap, so I haven’t bothered. I understand this limits me in some ways, and if you know of a band that I might like, please let me know. After all, you know my musical taste by now.
I know of the bluegrass band Union Station, because I found their cover of “Now That I’ve Found You” with Alison Krauss on YouTube. I also know The Androids and their song “Do It With Madonna.” But even those two bands are over 8 to 20 years old, and neither is my favorite.
I’ve also said before that I usually don’t have favorites, but as I thought about today’s song challenge, I decided that The Beatles have to be my favorite band. I like more of their songs than those of any other band – remember that is “band”, not “group”. (I could stretch “group” to mean almost anything, like Rogers and Hammerstein.) So I believe that quantity alone would make them my favorite.
Other groups that I enjoy are The Carpenters (Karen played drums.), The Beach Boys, Chicago, and ELO. I’m sure I could come up with more if I had the time, but I have to start thinking about tomorrow’s song.
